ABNM Eligibility

Education

You must have either a:
(a) doctoral degree in a physical science, life science or clinical allied health profession from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. 
(b)foreign medical or doctoral degree with documentation of US education equivalence (e.g. USMLE STep1 or EICS or ECFMG or AACRAO)
Online degrees will not be accepted.

Course Work

You must have passed two graduate level courses from an accredited education institution: one in neuroanatomy and a separate course in neurophysiology.

Requisite Cases

A minimum of 300 cases must of been performed by you in which you had the primary responsibility for supervising and interpreting them.  A minimum of 100 cases must of physically been performed by you including the technical aspects of monitoring. You must also have 36 months of being responsible for supervising and professional interpretation.

Of the 300 cases you must have case distribution between six categories as outlined here. The number of cases listed in each category is a minimum. 

I. Spine — (SPN) 45 cases
II. Spine Tumors and Lesions — (STL) 15 cases
III. Cranial Tumors and Non-vascular Lesions (CTL) 45 cases
IV. Interventional Neurophysiology — (INP) 10 cases
V. Vascular — (VAS) 45 cases
VI. ENT — (ENT) 5 cases

Training Neurophysiologist

You must of been primarily trained by a neurophysiologist who is a Board Certification from the American Board of Neurophysiologic Monitoring or a licensed physician who is Board certified in Neurology or Clinical Neurophysiology or, by another medical Board specialty deemed appropriate by this board. Your training neurophysiologist must provide evidence of a minimum of 5 years experience in intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) including at least 2 years of supervisory experience in IONM. The neurophysiologist must also have trained you in person either in the operating room and/or at the site of the provision of remote, telemedicine services in IONM for a minimum of 25 monitored cases. This requirement will not be met if the training was provided either indirectly. or remotely, or on-line.

If you were not trained in the USA or Canada a qualifying Training Neurophysiologist is either an individual with Board Certification from the American Board of Neurophysiologic Monitoring (ABNM) or, a neurophysiologist with a Ph.D. degree, or, a licensed physician who is Board Certified in your home country in a sub-specialty that is approved and recognized to provide interpretation of clinical neurophysiological data in that country. 

Attestations

You must also have two surgeons who you have provided intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring for will to sign a statement in support of your application.
