Recertification Process
You may apply for your recertification within 2 years of it expiring. This is to allow you additional time should you need more CME credits or to retake the exam again. If you wait and apply to sit the exam at a date after your DABNM has expired you will be disqualified.
Recertification Exam
The recertification exam consists of 250 questions. It is administered by PTC in the same manner as the Part 1 written exam. It is available at testing centers across the nation and internationally. To review the topics and makeup of the written exam review the section on the Written Exam
Continuing Education
In addition to the recertification exam you must complete the “ABNM Record of Continuing Medical Education” form included in the application packet, documenting 50 Continuing Medical Education (CME) Credits and include their CME certificates. Forty of these CME credits must be directly related to clinical neurophysiology and 10 may be on tangentailly related topics if obtained from an ABNM approved entity (i.e. ASNM, ACNS, ISIN, UPMC, SpecialtyCare). All CME credits must be obtained within 5 years prior to your recertification exam.

Where can I find ABNM accepted CME Credits?
Approved CME courses in IONM include all IONM courses provided by IONM Societies, specifically the ASNM, ACNS and ISIN. Other approved CME courses in IONM include all IONM courses provided by academic programs or private companies and institutions that provide validated CME level IONM courses. At this time, the ABNM has approved IONM courses that are provided by SpecialtyCare and UPMC. Other IONM courses may be submitted to the ABNM for consideration to be listed as an approved ABNM CME activity. here.
Can I include CME courses that are related to IONM but not directly on the topic?
At most, 10 of the 50 required CME credits may be obtained from other courses that are not IONM courses, per se, but do include Yes, you can include a maximum of 10 credits if there is some IONM content and they were hosted by ASNM, ACNS, ISIN, UPMC or SpecialtyCare. You are required to include a copy of the course program or syllabus with the application that must include the title and presenter of the IONM CME activity and the name of the CME provider. The CME certificate must be annotated to clearly document the total number of CME hours that were specifically related to IONM content as distinct from all other non-IONM CME content.
Can I use my Continuing Education Units (CEUs)?
No. The credits must be CME. 10. CMEs must be awarded by approved educational institutions in the USA or the national equivalent of the AMA for non-US based educational institutions.
